Issues in Today's Society

Two issues in today’s society
Poverty is a very large issue in society today and it’s not getting any better. There are millions of people going hungry and not having enough nutritious food to support their body’s needs. Globally the poverty statistics are very scary, about 1.4 billion people worldwide struggle to survive on less than $1.25 a day and 1.1 billion people lack access to clean water. Approx. 24,000 children die every day due to poverty. I understand the poor people in areas such as Africa because there is nothing they can do about it, but the poor people in major cities in the united states don’t make much sense to me when they could go out and at least try to get a job rather than just sit there and not try to get out of the rut they are in.

Another problem in today’s society is racial stereotyping and prejudice. I haven’t seen much of this because of where I live and my race, but they say everyone has equal right when below the surface people make decisions based on race even though they make a different excuse, for example: if an African American person went to the same job interview as a Caucasian man, the Caucasian man would have a better shot judging by whom was doing the interview. I myself don’t really understand why you could be racist because everyone is different why should you act differently towards them just because they look a lot different.

Chapter 8: Social Class and Social Stratification

I picked Chapter 8: Social Class and Social Stratification because I can somewhat relate to it because when I was in second grade my mother, sister, and I were living in poverty and it changed my life and views on poor people forever but now we would be considered middle class and we are doing pretty good so I have experienced the social classes other, than the upper class, pretty well. As for the reason people end up in the state of poverty, you get there by lack of hard work. If you get lazy when you don’t have margin for error then obviously you are going to end up in a distraught situation.
This is a news article talking about the poor people in New York I chose this article because we are staying in New York City and I have seen some of these poor people.
